Sunsets, Sacred Sites & Soft Goodbyes of A Soulfully Curated Journey
May 04, 2025
Yesterday morning began with a farewell to the Sun Times Nile cruise. Bags packed and heart full, I boarded a flight from Aswan back to Cairo before taking the coastal road toward Alexandria.
The hum of the car, the shifting landscapes and the quiet stir of emotion accompanied me—excitement, reflection, and the gentle heaviness of knowing this journey was slowly drawing to a close.
The next morning began underground—in the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a labyrinth of stone and silence. Each of the 99 steps carried me deeper into the cool embrace of the earth. As my feet touched the bottom, I felt it: that ancient pull. A grounding energy. A stillness that seemed to echo with the memory of lives once lived, honoured and laid to rest here.
The air was damp and heavy, yet peaceful. I gently ran my eyes along the carved rock walls, each groove whispering a story. I imagined the hands that shaped them, the rituals that took place, the mourning and the reverence etched into stone. There was a holiness in the hush.
And then—as if on cue—the moment we emerged, the skies opened. At first a soft drizzle, then a sudden, unexpected downpour. Rain in Alexandria is more than Cairo might see in months. It felt like a blessing.
A sacred washing. As if the sky was releasing something on our behalf. A childlike joy rose in me as the raindrops landed on the windscreen—fresh, cleansing, wildly alive.
Later that day, we stepped into the magnificent modern Library of Alexandria. I truly felt dwarfed by its brilliance. After all the temples that have been visited, being inside was like being in a library of light.
Eleven levels of knowledge. 6,000 granite blocks. A circular design left intentionally incomplete—because wisdom never ends. I moved through the space in awe, reading words in over a hundred languages, running my hand along ancient scripts and modern ideas.
The entire building is shaped like a rising sun. And that’s exactly what it felt like: illumination, hope, continuity. A symbol that knowledge, like the sun, rises anew each day. My chest swelled with emotion. Not from dust, but from wonder.
We left Alexandria early the next morning for a 114 km drive toward El Alamein. The desert stretched endlessly beside us, the sky wide and bright with promise.
There was a different kind of weight here. A reverence that pressed gently on the heart. At the El Alamein War Cemetery, I walked slowly between rows of graves—each one a soft-spoken prayer in stone. I paused at names I didn’t know but somehow felt connected to. The silence here felt full rather than empty. Sacred. Seen.
Inside the Military Museum, stories leapt from uniforms, maps and artefacts—stories I had only read about in books, now made tangible. I felt the echo of history—not just as something that happened, but as something that still breathes in these sands.
That afternoon, after arriving back in Alexandria, I had one last swim in the pool at The Hilton Corniche, the Mediterranean sparkling below me. The water wrapped around me with calm and clarity. My body softened. My spirit exhaled. It was one of those deep sigh moments—I am here. I have lived this. I will carry it forever.
Tomorrow offers a much needed sleep-in before my final departure from Cairo. A brief stopover in Dubai awaits, then home. What I’m carrying home with me is far more than just souvenirs or snapshots. It’s soul-deep memory. Texture. Taste. Truth.
This trip—this sacred, soul-stirring adventure—was consciously and lovingly curated by the incredible Melinda from Savenio, a true curator of luxury travel experiences.
Melinda doesn’t just plan travel—she weaves soul into every itinerary, blending comfort with connection, elegance with exploration. Every detail of this journey was intentional—from temple timings to tea stops, from sacred sites to sacred stillness. And while this journey was intimate and deeply personal, the beauty of her work is that it’s available to any traveler, for any destination.
Her small, private group travel experiences invite intimacy, authenticity, and the freedom to move at your own rhythm. To linger longer in a temple that stirs something within you. To laugh louder. To breathe deeply beside the Nile. To be seen not as a number, but as a soul with a story.
