Sydney Adventures: From Central Station to Secret Gardens
Oct 30, 2024There’s nothing quite like swapping work attire for an adventure wardrobe, stepping away from the routine, and plunging into the sights, sounds, sensations and tastes of a favourite city. My week of annual leave was a chance to explore Sydney, moving from the day-to-day hustle into a journey of discovery, good food, and iconic experiences. Keep reading as I share how each day unfolded. A perfectly curated blend of relaxation, exploration and a bit of indulgence.
The adventure started with a tram ride from Central Station to Circular Quay. After settling in, a late lunch at the Paragon Hotel set the mood with some city-centre views and much-needed sustenance. Checking into the Sydney Harbour Hotel felt like a mini-reset, officially marking the beginning of my break. Knowing how sensatioanl the rooftop view were, this was the first thing to see.
Once I dropped our bags, Joel & I walked over to the Fortune of War, one of the oldest pubs in Sydney, where the charm of vintage architecture and a laid-back vibe brought out the historical roots of Sydney. For dinner, we made our way to Esteban Mexican, where the chef’s menu didn’t disappoint. Each dish was a flavourful journey in itself, adding some vibrant spice to the day before heading back to Circular Quay.
After a relaxed walk back to the hotel in The Rocks, we had fully transitioned into holiday mode, ready for all the adventures to come.
Monday kicked off with a morning ferry to Manly, with the sun shining bright over the water. There is something special about starting a day with a scenic ferry ride, and the sight of the Sydney Harbour stretching out under the morning light was exactly what was needed.
In Manly, a little stroll along the Corso, soaking in the beachy vibe before breakfast at the Manly SLSC. Their tropical toastie hit the spot—a refreshing twist on a breakfast classic. Anything with Pineapple is good right (well at least in my eyes and tastebuds) before a tantalising treat from Anita Gelato on the way back to the ferry wharf.
Back at Circular Quay, it was time to wander into the Royal Botanical Gardens, exploring the lush paths leading to the iconic Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair. Surprisingly, despite many visits to Sydney, I had never been here, so finally seeing this historic point and enjoying the panoramic view of the harbor was a highlight.
As a bonus, we choose to ventured inside the Opera House, appreciating its majesty up close.
Lunch was a delicious stop at Wahlburgers, refueling before heading to the Sydney Jewish Museum. The experience was both somber and moving, especially the children’s memorial—a place that invites reflection on history and resilience.
After a quick essentials run at Big W and Woolworths at Town Hall, we meandered past the impressive Royal Princess cruise ship docked nearby. An afternoon drink at the Orient Hotel set the tone for an Italian dinner around the corner at Caminetto, savouring the cozy atmosphere and comforting dishes, ending the day with a sense of peace and fulfillment.
Tuesday was packed with variety, starting with a hearty breakfast at Pancakes on the Rocks. Sharing an Aussie Sunrise and Eggs Benedict, savouring each bite..
A professional visit to get a DNEye Measurment and I was fitted for my new Yalea frames from DeRigo Eyewear—a treat for both my eyes and style. This visit included a fascinating personal tour of the Rodenstock lens lab. Being able to put a face to name of the staff I speak to on a weekly basis who were fantastic guides, taking us through the lens-making process, and giving a behind-the-scenes look at their precision work.
The next stop was Wendy’s Secret Garden, a hidden gem in Lavender Bay. Stepping into this lush, artful space felt like entering another world, with each path winding through layers of greenery and whimsical sculptures. The peaceful charm of the garden was the perfect contrast to the busy pace of the city.
A quick train from the ornate Milsons Point Station to Wynyard, followed by a tram back to Circular Quay, brought us to Customs House Bar for a late lunch.
To top it off, I treated myself to a mango coco dessert in Thai Town, and then made my way to the Morning Glory shop in Chinatown. Surrounded by Hello Kitty, Blue Bear, Kuromi and other nostalgic favourites, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my teenage years.
The evening started with drinks at The Argyle, where the energetic atmosphere felt like a taste of nightlife. Joel & I chose dinner and a few drinks at The Glenmore, enjoying spectacular rooftop views of the city lights before strolling back to the room, grateful for another day of memories.
Wednesday morning arrived all too soon, and with a bittersweet feeling, it was time to finish packing and check out. Time for a reflective stroll to Circular Quay Station, taking in the sights one last time before heading to Platform 10 at Central Station. Breakfast with my love at Central gave us a moment to relax and savour the city ambiance, while we reminisced on our travels before boarding the train to Newcastle.
In true adventure fashion, a last-minute platform change had us hustling to get to Platform 3—an unexpected dash to wrap up Sydney adventures. As the train pulled out of the station, I found myself reflecting on a trip filled with exploration, relaxation and a deeper appreciation for the timeless charm of Sydney.
The start of a week of annual leave was more than just a break from the office and working. It was a chance to immerse in the beauty of Sydney, each day bringing new sights and tastes, blending iconic stops with hidden gems. There is something truly special about stepping out of routine that brings a fresh perspective and sense of freedom. Whether I was admiring city views, exploring secret gardens, savouring incredible food or spending time with my love, this adventure carried me through a memorable escape—proof that there is always something new to discover, even in familiar places.
